Hello parents!
Welcome to first grade! I am Ms. Hansen, your child’s teacher for literacy, math, and/or homeroom. This is my second year of teaching and I am excited for another wonderful year in first grade. I am excited to get to know you and get to know all my students. Each Monday I will be updating my website with a “newsletter” for the week so you will know the important information for the week. My website URL is at the bottom of this email under my signature. I will also be emailing you each Monday either letting you know that my website has been update or I will copy and paste the entire “newsletter” for the week, so watch for my email each Monday afternoon. I will follow the same format each week: important school wide dates, any important info for everyone, Literacy info, Math info, and Homeroom info. Thank you in advance for your patience as we start the new school year and establish new routines. If you need to get in contact with me, you can always email me, and I will respond within 24 hours. I am hoping to have open communication with each parent so we can work together and make it the best year for every student. Calendar: August 19: First day of school August 22: Back to School night 5:00 – 7:00 pm August 23: Early out @ 12:45 pm August 30: Early out @ 12:45 and Dollar Dress Down Day (Students can pay $1 to wear casual dress or wear uniforms) Literacy: This week will be giving our Beginning-of-Year assessment to assess where each students’ level of understanding is in Literacy. We will also begin our “Start Smart” unit in our Wonders reading program, this will be Start Smart Week 1. Start Smart reviews letters, sounds, and basic components of reading. It serves as an introduction to the program and is a great way to start the school year. Every Monday, I will send home a reading log with each student in Literacy. I didn’t get it sent out today, so expect it tomorrow. Please read with your student at least 20 minutes every night and write the book title and how many minutes you read per night. The reading log will need to be signed and returned every Friday. After our three weeks of Start Smart, I will begin sending home spelling lists and spelling homework every week in addition to the reading logs. There may also be occasional at home projects that can count towards your volunteer hours. Math: This week will be giving our Beginning-of-Year assessment to assess where each students’ level of understanding is in Math. We will also be giving our i-Ready diagnostic. i-Ready is an app/website that gives the students independent practice. The diagnostic will assess their understanding and then give them lessons on that level. If you are interested in volunteering during math, I have a link to a sign up at the bottom of this email. If there is a week that you aren’t able to come in, please let me know and then I will send out an email to all literacy parents asking for a one-time volunteer that week. Right now, I am looking for one person who is willing to take home our math books to tear out pages for the class. I like to have the homework pages torn out, so we aren’t spending that time during class tearing them out. This will be a big project and will count toward many of your volunteer hours. I am hoping that we can start our math lessons next Monday, August 26, so I am asking for someone now in order to give you plenty of time. If you are interested, please email me and I will give you more information and coordinate a time where you can pick up the math books. When we start our math lessons, homework will be sent home almost every day and will need to be turned in the next day. Homeroom: This week we will be doing “Get to Know You” activities, going over procedures and routines, and community building activities. In each homeroom in the school we have a “Class Captain.” A class captain will organize class parties for holidays, may coordinate volunteer opportunities, ask parents for donations, coordinate teacher appreciation activities, and any other things I may need done throughout the year. If you are interested in being my Homeroom Class Captain, please email me and let me know or you can let me know at Back to School night. I am looking forward to getting to know all my students this week and I can’t wait for the exciting year we are going to have in first grade! If you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me. Thank you for your support in your child’s education! This website will be where you can find information about the 2019 - 2020 school year and what is happening in 1st grade at Wasatch Peak Academy. I look forward to meeting all my students and parents as the school year begins next week. Take a look around the website!
I will attach my Back to School Night Flip Book (Disclosure) on the right side of this page, so you can take a look at it and become familiar with everything and come with questions next Thursday, August 22, 5;00 - 7:00 pm. |
