As I mentioned, I will be on vacation with my family November 18-22, so I will have a substitute for the week. I talked to my classes about appropriate behavior with a substitute, but if you could also give them a reminder to be respectful, that will be appreciated by me and the substitute. Some students think that is okay to be disrespectful to a substitute so I am hoping that will not happen this week many reminders before. Calendar: November 21: Vision Screening K-3rd and 5th Grades November 26: Dollar Dress Down Day November 27: No School, PD Day November 28 – 29: Thanksgiving Break, No School Literacy: This week will be Wonders Unit 2 Week 4. The weekly homework packet is due on Friday. Your child should be reading 20 minutes every night. Please practice the spelling words and vocabulary words with your student every night. The spelling test will be on Friday. Please try to have your student do 15-20 minutes of Imagine Learning at home each week. Spelling words:
Math: We are continuing Chapter 4: Subtraction Strategies this week. Please try to have your student do 15-20 minutes of iReady at home each week, in addition to their homework sheets. If you see your student struggling on iReady, you can reread the question to them, but if you help them with the question it will not accurately assess what they know. iReady is adaptive and it increasingly gets harder as students correctly finish lessons. If they don’t pass a lesson it will have them repeat the lesson again. So please try your best to not help them figure out the answer or answer it for them. Monday: Chapter 4 Lesson 5: Make a 10 to Subtract Tuesday: Lesson 6: Related Facts Wednesday: Lesson 7: Fact Families Thursday: Lesson 8: Missing Addends Friday: Chapter 4 Test Homeroom: Next week, we will continue our unit on Weather and Seasons. Thank you for your support in your child’s education. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you or any questions I can answer.

Hello Parents, Happy Veteran’s Day! Our first grade is looking for donations to put together hygiene kits for Family Promise, a company that helps homeless families in our community. We sent home a yellow flyer with all students last week. I will attach it to this email in case you misplaced it. You have until this Wednesday to send those donations with your students. Thank you to those parents who have already given donations! As a heads up for next week, I will be on vacation with my family November 18-22, so I will have a substitute for the week. Hello Parents, I hope you all had an enjoyable Halloween and long weekend. It was wonderful seeing many of you at the Halloween Parade on Thursday and it was so fun seeing the students in their costumes. As the weather is getting colder please make sure you send a jacket/coat with your student every day. If they want to wear a jacket in the classroom it needs to be school colors. Their jacket does not need to be school colors for recess. Please write your student’s name on the tag of their jackets. Please make sure you are dropping your student off to school on time. There are some students who are consistently late almost every day. Even if it is only a few minutes it will add up over time and that will be critical instruction time that they are missing. There are many students who do not have their own pair of headphones at school. On our supply list for the beginning of the school year we asked each student to come with a pair of headphones. I have some in my classroom, but students keep complaining that they don’t work. They are brand new, so I am not sure what is happening. I know that if students have their own headphones they take better care of them. If you can, please send a pair of headphones with your student if you haven’t already. We designed a flyer today for a service project that we will be doing and we will be writing letters to soldiers later in the week. Thank you so much to the parents who volunteered and helped at the Halloween party. It was very successful and all the students had a great amount of fun. Math: We are starting Chapter 3: Addition Strategies to 20 this week. Homework is sent home daily with students. I have decided that starting with Chapter 3, I will no longer be entering homework grades into the gradebook. I have been scoring them based off if they are turning it or not and I feel that the more important grades and scores should be based off the work that is done in the classroom. I would still like the homework to be turned in, but I will not be grading homework anymore. I will often send home the graded independent practice pages with your student. You can look at those and rework the questions they have missed, and your student can bring it back and I will give them credit for those questions or give them the points. Please also try to have your student do 15-20 minutes of iReady at home each week. Monday: Lesson 1: Count On 1, 2, or 3 Tuesday: Lesson 2: Count On Using Pennies Wednesday: Lesson 3: Use a Number Line to Add Thursday: Lesson 4: Use Doubles to Add Friday: Lesson 5: Use Near Doubles to Add Homeroom: This week in Homeroom we will be talking about the Sun and the Moon. I am still looking for parents to sign up for the class Halloween Party. This is a great volunteer opportunity. The students love seeing their parents come in and help in the classroom and class parties are one of their favorite things. It is also a great way to get volunteer hours. Our class parties are not successful without the help of wonderful parents. If you have lost the link to the sign up, please email me or my class captain and we can send that out again. I would like to have parents signed up by the end of this week so everything can be planned for the party next week. Thank you for your support in your child’s education. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you or any questions I can answer. October 11, 2019

Hello Parents, Many of you have already signed up for Parent Teacher Conferences. Those conferences are meant to discuss data regarding Literacy and Math and other concerns/questions. If you have not signed up to meet with your students math and literacy please sign up quickly as spots are filling up. Meeting with your homeroom teacher is optional. We are a month and a half into the school year, and we have been enjoying the time we have spent with your children so far! They are learning a lot and I can already see the growth. First grade is a big year for learning and for gaining independence. We greatly appreciate the support that you give your student every day. However, we feel that it is important that first graders walk to their classrooms in the morning on their own to gain that independence. We understand that it may be hard for some students at first, but after enough practice of doing it on their own it will feel very comfortable. Hello Parents, Many of you have already signed up for Parent Teacher Conferences. Those conferences are meant to discuss data regarding Literacy and Math and other concerns/questions. If I only have your child for homeroom you DO NOT need to schedule a conference with me, as there is no data to discuss for homeroom. If you are concerned about behavior you can schedule a time, but I know meeting with three teachers can be a lot, so once again, you do not need to sign up for a conference if I only have your child for homeroom. Please reach out to me with any questions regarding parent teacher conferences. I look forward to seeing you and talking with you in two weeks. Hello Parents, I hope you had an enjoyable long weekend. As a follow up from my email last week, I have noticed a few more students who have been trying hard to listen in class. If you haven’t talked to your child, please take a few moments to sit down with your child and talk about listening and respecting teachers and adults in the classroom/school building. There are some students who have been doing an OUTSTANDING job at listening to me while I am teaching, but there are a few who still continue to talk over me and do not listen. I am working on it within in the classroom, but a comment from you as their parents would be appreciated, thank you.
